As a pastor, your time is a hot commodity. One major time-taker is meetings. Many leaders dread meetings as a necessary evil, feeling a strong connection to Lencioni’s best-selling title, Death by Meeting. While meetings are an inevitable necessity in leadership, they can become time-consuming.
Leading with Bias
Our current world is talking constantly about bias. You can be sure that you reveal your biases to others as they watch, listen, and learn from you. While it is essential that we are aware of our biases, we must be careful not to throw out all bias. We likely cannot and arguably should not avoid all types of bias.
Leading Difficult Team Members
Difficult team members can hamper team success and team members’ satisfaction. Often, we talk about the toxic person or how to get the right people in the right seat of the bus (or the wrong person off the bus completely). These are worthwhile conversations to have, but not to the exclusion of first making an investment in the lives of hurting or difficult people.

Recently, I was assisting a missions organization with team development. During conversations about healthy conflict, feedback, and buy-in, a team member asked for advice on how to give constructive feedback in a non-threatening way—especially when no one has asked for your input. Maybe you’ve heard the word “essential” a lot during this COVID-19 crisis. Essential businesses. Essential workers. Essential supplies like toilet paper, hand sanitizer, face masks, and decent internet. Or, even more essential items such as ventilators and PPE.
